There was a time not that long ago when Sunday Funday meant brunch at the Pal with friends and way too many cocktails. These days, we’re trying to make more of an effort to get out and do things. Don’t get me wrong – I love brunch and cocktails with friends, it’s the best; and I have no intention of stopping that habit. I’m just going to try to inject a little physical activity in there now and again.
This past Sunday, we decided we would get out for a winter hike – I mean the mountains are like 45 min. away, so we have no excuses…except that we don’t have winter tires. I know – we’re terrible Canadians and even worse Albertans.
So Clint and I picked Caitlin up, filled the tank, grabbed some coffees and started making our way towards Canmore. We got about a third of the way there and realized we might have an issue. The roads were icy, the wind picked up quite quickly and the snow started flying around across the highway causing a little whiteout. We decided better safe than sorry, turned around and made our way back to the city. But, we weren’t about to give up on our little adventure; it was a beautiful day and we were all dressed up and ready to play outside after all.
Instead of the mountains we took a little city trip to Edworthy Park. Sadly it’s been a few years since any of us took a winter walk through there; so long we almost forgot how beautiful it was.
Some of the pathways are closed due to outstanding damage from the flood in 2013, but we still managed a beautiful short hike through the woods up to the lookout.
It turned out to be a great afternoon spent with my loves, while at the same time adding a little healthy activity back into our lives. We got to breath in some fresh air, chat, laugh and warm up over a meal together; there really isn’t much that compares.
Our first choice for where to warm up – Lazy Loaf, except that it was way too busy for us to hang around this time, so we went to Boogies Burgers instead. Check back in a few weeks for my reviews on both places.
I love brunch, and I really love cocktails. Thing is, I also love feeling a little accomplishment at the end of the day. After two or three drinks it’s easy to have four or five and then my day is a wash.
The other thing is, exercise can sometimes feel like a drag especially when you could be enjoying a caesar. But I’ve realized there’s a few small things you can do to make it feel a little less like work. 1) Bring your better half with you. Not only will you enjoy it more – but the two of you get to spend some quality time together, and you happen to be doing an activity that is positive and beneficial for both of you. 2) If you’re not feeling a date day, make it a girls get together. Having your tribe of beautiful babes can make any activity more fun (plus, then you have a reason to have a cocktail after). 3) Make sure the activity you choose for the day is reasonable. There’s no need to try to force yourself into a 10K hike, unless of course that’s your jam – then go for it. Doing a little is better than doing nothing.
There it is, chose an activity that provides you with an attainable goal for the day, and make it intimate or social. I promise you, it will totally change your outlook and make it pretty damn fun.
Hopefully you’ll give it a try, and I’ll keep it up!
