Summer time and the livin is easy…

Does anyone remember that Sublime song? Haha, I’m dating myself for sure here. Anyways, the song and this sangria definitely make me feel like summer is here to stay.

Sangria is one of my all time favorite drinks because you can make it an everything but the kitchen sink kind of mix and it’s pretty much guaranteed to be good. There are so many yummy combinations.

This particular recipe is a knock off of what I can remember from a white sangria that used to be on the Brava Bistro menu here in Calgary.  The restaurant is long gone, but the flavour of that sangria stuck with me.  Now, honestly it’s been a decade since I last had it so I’m sure the recipe is way off – but it’s real good, and that’s what matters.

My favourite things about Sangria

You can make it ahead and the flavour only gets better and better.

You can make a large amount at once, which makes it the perfect summer drink for a backyard bbq or party.

You can use red or white wine, and almost any type will do!

You can use pretty much any kind of fruit you have on hand, including frozen fruit.

Other fruit for white wine sangria

Stone fruit – nectarines, plums, and apricots

Citrus fruit – oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes

Other favourites – apples, pears, starfruit, dragon fruit, pineapple, honeydew, and kiwi

How to make sangria

It couldn’t be easier –  dump all your sliced/diced fruit into a pitcher.

Pour it over – pour the wine, elderflower syrup (and gin and juice if you use it) overtop and give it a stir.

Fill your glass with ice – pack it full to the brim. pour the sangria mix overtop leaving a little room.

Top it off – top it with Soda. Gingerale and Sprite work too, they just add a mit more sweetness. Add a slice or two of fruit as a garnish.

I hope you love this recipe as much as I do. It is bright, fruity, just perfectly sweet-ish, super refreshing, and absolutely delicious.

Don’t be afraid to switch things up a bit and add more or less of something you know you do or don’t like.

White Wine and Elderflower Sangria

This simple and fruity white wine sangria recipe is made with blueberriess, peaches, and green grapes. It’s slightly sweet (thanks to those in season BC blueberries and peaches) and perfectly refreshing . It’s the quintessential summer sipping cocktail for backyard BBQs and parties!

Equipment

1 glass pitcher any kind of pitcher will do

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle pinot grigio
  • 1 cup elderflower syrup
  • 1 whole peach sliced
  • 1 cup green grapes sliced
  • 1 cup blueberries

Optional additions

  • splash Soda water to top
  • 4 oz gin
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1 whole lime sliced

Instructions

  • In a pitcher, mix together white wine, elderflower syrup, and fruit. If you are adding the gin, lime slices and/or apple juice, pour that in as well.
  • If serving immediately, grab your glasses and fill with ice. Pour the sangria mix to about 2/3 of the way, top with soda water and if you like garnish with a lime slice, peach slice or green grape. Sangria holds well in the fridge in an airtight container for 3 days and the flavour only gets better.

Notes

The sangria is fantastic with a pinot grigio, but feel free to use what you have for wine - just try and stay away from wines that are super sweet (riesling/gewurtztraminer) or super oaky (chardonnay).
If you can't find elderflower syrup, you can also use elderflower liqueur. However, I would lower the amount to 1/3 of a cup of the liqueur.
This sangria is perfect as the recipe is written, but if you do want to spice it up a notch, I would add the gin and lime slices and if want it a little sweeter, add the apple juice. Or you can get crazy and add all three, it is delicious like this as well.
